James DeGale v Badou Jack Spoiler

James DeGale was forced to draw deep on his physical reserves as he retained his International Boxing Federation super-middleweight world title. The Londoner suffered a perforated eardrum, a suspected broken nose and had a tooth knocked out in a dramatic draw with Badou Jack, of Sweden.

The battle of Brooklyn lived up to its billing, with both men felled in the fight. Jack late in the first round, from a left hand down the pipe. DeGale in the last round, exhausted, as the Las Vegas-based Jack rescued the contest which before that, would have resulted in a unanimous points decision triumph for the 30-year-old from Harlesden.

Neither protagonist was happy when the scores of 114-112, for DeGale, and 113-113 twice, were read out after. DeGale’s stock rose in the United States on this showing, though, against the immensely strong, if limited, World Boxing Council champion. Promoter Eddie Hearn told The Daily Telegraph: “James has just gone through a war and it will take him until the summer to come back. He’ll need that time.”
