Quote:Danny 'Swift' Garcia has his mind focused on Zab Judah this month, but was recently asked about statements made from former undefeated fighter Brandon Rios. Who said, that Danny Garcia was not that good, that Lucas Matthysse would be a better match for him.

All Garcia could say was "Maybe he's jealous of me." Garcia doesn't talk trash, he's pretty humble he just wants to fight. He's not for theater, but he will give you great results. "I don't go on the internet and watch interveiws, people tell me, you heard what he said, and I just think he's jealous, because I don't even talk about him."

McDonnell plans on punishing Ceja

Quote:Doncaster's Jamie McDonnell believes his army of supporters, and opponent Julio Ceja's lack of a well-stamped passport, will be crucial in sweeping him to world title victory when the pair clash in his hometown's Keepmoat Stadium on May 11.

The bantamweights go head-to-head for the vacant IBF crown on the pitch at the home of Doncaster Rovers Football Club, and Jamie is convinced Ceja's first experience of fighting outside of his native Mexico will be a painful one.

"It's a massive factor," stated the 27-year-old. "It's probably what will make me win the fight, having that home support behind me, cheering me on.

"He's always had that in his favour and he's not used to being out of his comfort zone, it's all new to him. Having 9000 'Donny' people screaming for me, it's going to be intimidating for him.

"I've fought at the [Doncaster] Dome plenty of times and it's a different buzz you get fighting in front of your own people. It gives you a massive boost and you don't want to let all those 'Donny' fans down."

Unbeaten Ceja will arrive in the UK with a fearsome reputation. The 20-year-old has knocked out 22 of his 24 opponents, with 15 of those wins coming within the first three rounds.

McDonnell, though, isn't intimidated. The former British and European bantamweight king is convinced he has the beating of the South American hard-man, and is even hoping to finish the fight early.

"I rate him a lot," said Jamie, who has lost just two of 23 bouts. "He's ranked number three [in the world] and you don't get that if you're nothing special, but I'll take him into those later rounds and punish him.

"I'm used to going into those rounds but I don't think he's ever done 12. So there are a lot of pluses going for me. He's got his power but I'm not going to sit there and start taking his shots, I'll be using my feet and my head.

"I don't think he hits as hard as his record says, but don't get me wrong he can punch because to stop 22 from 24, even if they're journeymen, that's impressive. He definitely can fight but I believe I'll beat him and hopefully stop him."

Quote:Julio Diaz has warned Amir Khan that he should not be underestimated ahead of their bout in Sheffield on April 27. Khan will be fighting on British soil for the first time in two years, following four consecutive fights in the US, but his Mexican opponent Diaz has issued that it will be not be plain-sailing when the pair meet at the Motorpoint Arena.

"I'm looking forward to it and very excited," he told Sky Sports. "They think it's a safe fight, for him [Khan] to come back and rebuild his career and his confidence. He took on Carlos Molina in his last fight, a very small guy with no power, a very straight-forward type of guy. He made Amir Khan look good. I'm not Carlos Molina, I'm a veteran, experienced and a very strong puncher. If they chose me for Amir to look great in his home town I think it's the worst mistake they made."

Despite suffering seven losses on his record, 33-year-old Diaz is confident that he can get his career back on track and insists the fight against Khan could prove to be a starting point for revival.

"I'm coming to fight, I'm trying to rebuild my own career. I'm not just happy to be there, I'm going for Amir Khan," Diaz said. "I'm going to the UK for a victory and I will get that knockout. This is a big opportunity for me so I'm training like never before to make sure everything is right. My head is clear, my personal life is good and this is a great time for me to be fighting. Amir Khan is going to get the best Julio Diaz you've ever seen. If Amir beats me, I give him all the credit in the world. I have no excuses."
Brandon Rios thinks he didn’t deserve to suffer his first pro defeat in his unanimous decision loss to Mike Alvarado this past Saturday.

“When I watched the fight, I did not lose that fight,” Rios said Friday morning in an ESPN.com online chat. “I have it 7-5 or with some of the rounds, maybe a draw.”

The judges, however, had the bout in Alvarado’s favor: two of them scored it 115-113, while the third judge’s tally was 114-113.

“He ran the last three rounds. He didn't connect,” Rios said. “I was the one doing the more damage. The more chasing. The more hitting. That's why I thought I won those last three rounds.”

Judge Bill Lerch gave Alvarado rounds 10, 11 and 12, though, while judges Dave Moretti and Duane Ford had Rios winning the 11th.

Rios said he and his teamthought this second bout would be just like their first war.

“With this fight, I did look slow,” Rios said. “I was heavy on my feet. He ran a lot. I didn't get any punches on him because he ran so much. I didn't get what I wanted off. It happens. I can not bring time back. He stuck to his gameplan. I'm ready for the third one now.

“It was my mistake. We were preparing for another brawl,” he said. “That's how I messed up. It was our fault. But it was a good job. We cut the ring off. But when we did that, I didn't pursue more. Next time we'll be ready for another game plan. Whatever he brings.”

De La Hoya: After Malignaggi, I Can see Broner Going To 140

Golden Boy has made everyone aware of their 140lb tourney that will begin on April 27th when Danny Garcia takes on Zab Judah and the second part will be May 18th when Lamont Peterson faces hard hitting Lucas Matthysse. The winners of each fight will be scheduled to fight each other while Amir Khan will fight the last man standing according to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer.

One fighter who might get thrown into the mix is Adrien Broner who is jumping up two weight classes to fight Paulie Malignaggi for the WBA Welterweight championship. BoxingScene caught up with Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya who said only because Broner is fighting at 147 this fight, it doesn’t mean he won’t come back down.

“Yes, absolutely. Look, the fact that Adrien Broner is moving up to 147 and challenging Paulie Malignaggi – who is a live dog, don’t count him out, it’s a tough fight for Broner - but the fact that he’s doing that it doesn’t mean he’s not wanting to fight the best at 140. I can see Broner going after a title and I don’t know what’s going to happen against Paulie Malignaggi but [I can see him] coming back to 140” De La Hoya would tell BoxingScene.

Many didn’t like the idea of Broner skipping the Junior Welterweight division which houses opponents who would be considered real threats to Adrien who is being groomed as boxing’s next big superstar. While Broner will be fighting for a Welterweight title, De La Hoya sees him coming back down to take on the best possible opposition.

“Broner, he wants to fight the best. He wants to fight the best and he’s going to fight the best. There’s no doubt about it. He just wants to make news, skip a couple weight classes and challenge a champion there. So do I see Broner going back down to 140? Yes, absolutely” said De La Hoya.

Joel Diaz stops Victor Sanchez in 5

Hard punching unbeaten prospect Joel Diaz (12-0, 11 KOs) of Palmdale, California went on the road and stopped Victor Sanchez (4-6-1, 1 KO) in Sanchez’ hometown of Houston, Texas. The bout was a featured eight round super featherweight attraction with Lou Savarese promoting. Sanchez’ record is very deceiving having fought and beaten unbeaten prospects. He even entered this bout coming off of his first round KO upset of Ramon Valdes (11-3) last month near Valdes’ Southern California hometown. This time Sanchez was fighting in front of his hometown fans who saw Diaz become the first to stop Sanchez inside the distance.

A very busy 2013 is being planned for Diaz by his promoter Boxing360. “I want to thank Lou Savarese for his professionalism and look forward to working with him again. I’m looking to have Joel fight two more times this month in addition to tonight’s fight. It is well known in boxing circles that Joel is talented, which is why I am keeping him busy and properly moving his career at the right pace,” said Boxing360 Founder Mario Yagobi.

The promoter first had Diaz scheduled to fight unbeaten Tyler Asselstine in a scheduled for TV ESPN 2 Friday Night Fights co-feature this past February, but Diaz unforturnately injured his hand a week before the fight forcing him to withdraw.

Next up for Diaz will be an eight round April 13th date at the Peck Center in Fernandina Beach, FL with an opponent to be announced. The bout will be shown live at LDLTV.com and Boxing360.com for those who want to see Diaz in action.

Quote:Undefeated Bulgarian brute Kubrat Pulev has claimed today that he has been approached to face returning former world champion David Haye on June 29 at the Manchester Arena.

The 31 year-old, who has a formidable 17-0 record, is reportedly being lined up for what would be only his third contest outside of his German base, according to an article published by Polish-based website BoxingBet.pl.

If the rumours are true and Pulev does accept the clash, Haye, 32, would be getting the top 10-ranked opponent he craves for his first bout in eleven months and will be a up against a dangerous foe in the 6ft 4ins current European champion.

'The Hayemaker' last fought when becoming the first to stop Dereck Chisora in front of 40,000 fans at West Ham United's Upton Park Stadium, whilst Pulev knocked out 27-0 Alexander Ustinov last September in the first defence of his EBU belt.

Quote:Scott Quigg is hoping to be back in action by June, according to trainer Joe Gallagher. The 24-year-old picked up the vacant interim WBA super-bantamweight title in November when sending fellow Briton Rendall Munroe into retirement with a sixth-round stoppage win.

However, his career is currently in limbo with no return date or opponent on the agenda with paymasters Hatton Promotions still working on potential TV deals. But despite his frustrations, Quigg has embarked on a 12-week camp in the hope that something will be sorted out in the meantime. "Scott Quigg's in training, we're just waiting on the Hattons to come up with some dates," Gallagher told Sky Sports. "We had a chat last week and we decided to go into camp, Scott likes a 12-week camp which will bring us to the beginning of June.

"I'm hoping that in five or six weeks something will have developed by then. But we've got to start now and if nothing happens by then he's going to be one unhappy bunny. He'll be looking to move on to pastures new. His manager Paul Speak is doing the best he can do and he's got to deliver now. They've said they're working on things and Scott's had a couple of offers that weren't suitable at this time. Both sides have a responsibility to honour their side of the contract. Scott is in the gym and working away and the Hattons have an obligation to honour their side."

Speak told Sky Sports he was currently engaged in talks but was unable to comment further.

The final press conference for Saturday’s big world championship twinbill in Macao, China, took place Thursday in Macao, China. WBA/WBO flyweight champion Brian “hawaiian Punch” Viloria defends his unified titles against Juan Francisco Estrada in one of two world title bouts.

Estrada stated that he is ready and happy to be fighting in his true weight class. “They are already telling Viloria that he’s going to get the opportunity to fight Shiming and they are saying the next fight of Shiming is probably Viloria. I think the next fight for Shiming can be Estrada,” said the challenger.

Viloria responded, “I’m taking everything that Estrada is saying and I’m going to have to beg to differ. I trained really hard for this fight. I came a long way from fighting in a parking lot. A couple of years ago eveyone said I was done after my third loss, but after putting together all these wins against these great, tough Mexican fighters, thank God I stuck to the sport.”
Promoter Bob Arum stated, “Zou Shinming is in this weight category. These are the kind of fighters he’ll be fighting as he progresses up the ranks towards a world championship.”

The NJBHOF’s Class of 2013 features former heavyweight champions Mike Tyson and Ray Mercer, and former middleweight champ Marvin Hagler.
It also includes longtime Philadelphia Daily News boxing writer Bernard Fernandez, promoter Gabe LaConte, judges Julie Lederman and Barbara Perez, welterweight Sal Lopez and middleweight Frank Savannah. Referee Harry Ertle and cruiserweight/heavyweight Carlos Hernandez will be inducted posthumously.

Moretti, a Ridgefield native, has worked in boxing since 1986, when he began his career learning from matchmakers who put together fights for Madison Square Garden. Now the vice president of boxing operations for Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., Moretti also has worked for Totowa-based Main Events and New York promoter Lou DiBella.
Gatti, the older brother of late legend Arturo Gatti, was a contender in the junior middleweight and super middleweight divisions, and went 30-8 (22 KOs) during a 15-year pro career that ended in 2002. Froch takes on Mikkel Kessler for the IBF and WBA super-middleweight titles, and Groves is set to make his second appearance for new manager Eddie Hearn by featuring on the undercard at the O2 Arena.

Speaking to Buncey's Boxing Podcast on ESPN, Booth said: "George is chief support [to Froch] on May 25 and I've been working with Eddie [Hearn] over the weekend to get him a top-ten ranked opponent, so that he can force his situation of being nominated as a mandatory challenger."
Groves defeated Baker Barakat in Germany near the end of March to register the 18th victory of his career and remain unbeaten, and Booth is confident his man will improve on that record. Booth said: "George is 18-0 now. Doing the business on May 25, he'll be 19-0. For quite a while with George he's been looking at every single middleweight and he's been saying 'I can beat him, I can beat him.'"

The National Anti-Doping Agency`s refusal to test star boxer Vijender Singh for heroin has left the Sports Ministry flummoxed and it will wait for a written response from NADA before deciding its next move. The NADA, which is an autonomous body, is willing to conduct a regular out-of-competition dope test on Vijender but has expressed its inability to test the Olympic bronze-medallist for heroin citing World Anti-Doping Agency`s protocol. In response, the Ministry said it would decide on its next move after getting NADA`s reply in writing.

"We have not asked NADA to proclaim anything on his guilt but just conduct a test to find out whether he took heroin... the NADA has not conveyed anything to us in writing, let them do that first and then we will think of our stand," Sports Secretary P K Deb told PTI. The Ministry had stepped in yesterday to clear the air on the controversy but NADA`s stand means that even a dope test would not give any conclusive evidence against Vijender, who has maintained a stoic silence after his initial denial.

"We will not be testing Vijender for heroin. We will strictly go by the NADA and WADA code. We are independent and will strictly follow the protocol for out-of-competition testing of an athlete irrespective of what the Sports Ministry has said," NADA director-general Mukul Chatterjee told PTI.

"There is no time frame in the letter which we have received from the Ministry, we will undertake the test when NADA finds it appropriate. NADA can`t go against the WADA code. The blood and urine test will be strictly conducted under the WADA code and the NADA rules. We cannot contradict the Sports Ministry as well as we are being funded by the government," he said.

Chatterjee said the dope test would be conducted on the boxer as per NADA`s discretion.

"We never disclose to anyone when and where the test will be conducted. This is prohibited under the WADA code. The last test which we did on him was in July-August 2012, it was negative," he said.
