Undefeated middleweightJason “Monstruo” Escalera (12-0-1, 11 KOs) and Nick “The Machine Gun” Brinson (9-1-2, 5 KOs) battled to a hard fought eight round draw. Scores were 76-75 for Escalera, 76-75 for Brinson, and 76-76.

Kendall Holt Withdraws From Josesito Lopez Clash

Quote:This is a legal waiver. By copying and using the material from this article, I agree to give full credit to BoxingScene.com

Quote:Kendall Holt has withdrawn from his scheduled June 22 fight against Josesito Lopez. Holt, a former WBO junior welterweight champion, told BoxingScene.com that he pulled out of the 12-round bout because he is concerned about boxing outside during the summer in Southern California. Holt had agreed to fight Lopez in an ESPN2 main event, but changed his mind when he learned Dan Goossen, Lopez’s promoter, had secured Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, Calif. as the site for the fight.

“I have no problem at all fighting Lopez,” Holt, 30, said. “But I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I don’t feel comfortable fighting outside. I don’t think it’s a good idea because it’s going to be hot and then you’ve got all the heat from the TV lights. That could a factor and that’s not a chance I should take.” Soboba Casino holds its fights under a large tent, thus fighters aren’t directly exposed to the sun. The Holt-Lopez fight would’ve started at about 7 p.m. PDT, when the sun is still shining, yet weaker than earlier in the day.

According to weatherreports.com, the average high temperature in San Jacinto in June is 91 degrees. The average low temperature is 51 degrees. Lopez is from nearby Riverside, Calif., but Holt said that wasn’t an issue because his attorney, Patrick English, had received an assurance from the IBF that California-based judges would not be assigned to what was to be an elimination fight for the No. 2 spot in the IBF’s 140-pound rankings. Goossen is expected to keep Lopez in the main event and find a replacement for Holt (28-5, 16 KOs), a Paterson, N.J., native who’s coming off a second-round technical knockout victory over Baltimore’s Tim Coleman (19-3-1, 5 KOs). Holt dropped Coleman four times in that fight, which also was televised as an ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” main event March 16 from Cabazon, Calif.

Dominating Coleman helped Holt overcome a 12-round split decision defeat to since-crowned WBC 140-pound champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KOs) in his previous fight, a WBC elimination match Oct. 15 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Lopez, 27, lost his last fight, but he gave highly touted prospect Jessie Vargas (19-0, 9 KOs) the toughest fight of his career. Lopez lost a split decision in their 10-rounder Sept. 17 in Las Vegas. Lopez (29-4, 17 KOs) knocked out previously unbeaten Mike Dallas Jr. (18-2-1, 7 KOs) in the bout before he lost to Vargas.

Boxingtalk has just been advised by a source requesting anonymity that Golden Boy Promotions, DiBella Entertainment and the California State Athletic Commission have all just been notified that Andre Berto has tested positive for a banned performance enhancing substance under VADA protocol. Boxingtalk has not seen the actual test result, but has been advised that Berto's A and B samples both showed traces of norandrosterone. Berto was scheduled to face Victor Ortiz in Los Angeles on June 23rd. The California commission will now have to consider whether to issue Berto a license, so it is premature to say whether the fight is off. Unlike the recent Lamont Peterson positive test, VADA, the Nevada-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association has promptly informed the promoters of the fight, i.e., Golden Boy and DiBella Entertainment. Boxingtalk called both Golden Boy and DiBella representatives, who did not answer the call. Last week, Berto's trainer Tony Morgan told the examiner.com, "I truthfully think drugs are rampant in the sport. I think they are. I think that this new style of testing is going to really drop the hammer on a lot of people. As long as we have the VADA testing, I’m not really worried about it. Because the VADA testing is what is going to catch it.”

Although the rumors have been lingering for months, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo finally confirmed his incarceration to ESPN's radio program "A Los Golpes." The boxer is being held at an immigration detention center in California. He surrendered himself through an agreement between his lawyers and the immigration authorities.

According to Angulo, he was set to appear for a court hearing in April to resolve the immigration issues, but for unknown reasons the court date was postponed until June. Angulo has been detained at the center for at least four months.

Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya came to visit him a few weeks ago to show his support. Angulo has been inactive since last November's six round TKO loss to James Kirkland. He was already facing immigration issues in the United States, but his desire to fight on American soil was the reason for his surrender to resolve the legal issues.

Quote:This is a legal waiver. By copying and using the material from this article, I agree to give full credit to BoxingScene.com

Quote:The negotiations are still ongoing for a potential unification between junior welterweights Amir Khan (26-2, 18KOs) and Danny Garcia (23-0, 14KOs). Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who promotes both boxers, is hopeful that he can finalize a deal for July 7th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. HBO would televise the card.

Schaefer is currently negotiating with both sides, attempting to reach a monetary agreement that would satisfy both fighters. “I’m having conversations with HBO, I’m having conversations with the Khans and I’m having conversations with Danny Garcia’s adviser, Al Haymon, to see if that fight can be put together. I’m working with all three parties from a monetary point of view to see if it can be done,” Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

Money is not the only issue at hand. The IBF and the WBA have yet to make a ruling on Golden Boy’s request to recognize Khan as the champion of both organizations. Last December, Khan lost the titles by way of a controversial twelve round split decision to Lamont Peterson. A planned May 19th rematch was canceled after Peterson, who agreed to a random drug testing protocol, tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

Peterson, through his attorney Jeff Fried, disclosed that his doctor had given him testosterone pellets in November 2011, several weeks before the initial meeting with Khan. Based on that admission, Golden Boy’s attorneys are attempting to reverse the split-decision loss to a no-contest – and they also want the IBF and WBA to strip Peterson and reinstate Khan as the champion.

“There are other issues out there, where we asked the IBF and the WBA to recognize Amir as the champion so it could be a world title unification bout,” Schaefer said. Garcia, the WBC champion, has his own title obstacle. A mandatory defense is owed to Ajose Olusegun. If Khan reclaims his WBA and IBF titles, that obstacle can be avoided pursuant to the rules of the sanctioning body.

"The fact is, if it is a world title unification bout - that takes precedent [over a mandatory]," Schaefer said. If a deal is reached for July 7th, undefeated heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell (25-0-1, 19KOs) would likely appear in the HBO televised co-feature, but veteran Michael Grant has been ruled out as the potential opponent.

I want to prove that I am the best boxer in the world so I will beat whoever crosses my way.“

Nets, Warriors, Mavericks contending for Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin will become restricted free agent on July 1st, which means the Knicks can match any offer he receives, but nothing is ever that simple.

As we've discussed several times, the Gilbert Arenas clause prevents Lin from making over $5 million in the first year of his next contract and $5.225 million in the second year, which is why other teams won't be able to offer more than the mid-level exception.

Of course, there is a caveat to that rule, and even though the Knicks can match any offer, it makes Lin's return anything but definite.

In addition to listing the Lin's former team, the Golden State Warriors, as well as the Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers and the Brooklyn Nets as the point guard's top suitors this summer (according to sources), Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD also dug into the loophole which could allow competing teams to offer more than the MLE to the breakout star: "A team with salary cap space could make things interesting by increasing Lin’s salary in years three and four of his contract and paying him the average salary of the four-year deal. However, if the Knicks match a back-loaded offer, they’ll have to pay the actual salary that he’s due for each season... That means if Brooklyn offers Lin $12,628,613 and $13,146,387 in the final two years of his deal, they’ll have to pay him $9,000,000 per season. However, if New York matches, they’ll owe Lin $5,000,000 next season, $5,225,000 in year two and then $12,628,613 in 2013-14, when they already owe Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler $60,632,000. Matching Lin isn’t the no-brainer decision that some have made it out to be when you consider how much it could cost New York in two years."

Quote:Three World title challengers are in the first four names announced for the Betfair Prizefighter International Heavyweights tournament on Wednesday June 20 at York Hall, Bethnal Green. Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson, Albert Sosnowski and Kali Meehan have all stepped in the ring to fight for World titles and that trio are joined by Kent’s Tom Dallas in the 25th edition of the eight man, one night tournament live on Sky Sports. Johnson and Sosnowski have both faced Vitali Klitschko for the WBC belt, while Meehan fell the wrong side of a split decision to Lamon Brewster for the WBO strap.

Kingpin had been lined up for the first International Prizefighter tournament won by Mike Perez in May 2011 in a knockout night at the Alexandra Palace, but passport problems scuppered his involvement. Johnson plans to make up for his absence this time and is in good shape after winning the IBF Australasian title in Queensland in April with his 20th KO in 25 wins. “I'm ready to put the American heavyweight boxing scene back on the map starting with the Betfair Prizefighter tournament on June 20,” said Johnson. “Like I tell everybody, I am the best American heavyweight - bar none! If people see me, they will know it. Don't worry about Seth Mitchell, Chris Arreola or any of those other clowns. Just focus on me and watch me deliver. I'm the best heavyweight in the world that's not named Klitschko, and after Prizefighter, I'll take care of that too.

“I was devastated when I learned that I couldn't travel last year to participate in Prizefighter. I was in top shape and ready to face every heavyweight in the tournament but I'm going to make up for that this year by knocking out everybody in the first round in all three fights. I'm not taking no chances so I'm bringing my A-game to London. I'm already coming off of a huge win in Australia so after this the whole world is going to know that I am back and ready to dominate the heavyweight division. I can't wait to get to the UK and I plan on making it make my second home after I win Prizefighter.”

Lewis slams 'poor taste' Haye-Chisora fight

Quote:Former heavyweight champion of the world Lennox Lewis has hit out at David Haye's forthcoming fight against Dereck Chisora, saying the bout is in "poor taste". Haye and Chisora are set to fight at Upton Park on July 14, with the contest sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation after the British Boxing Board of Control revoked Chisora's licence following an infamous press-conference brawl with Haye in Munich in February. The pair got into a dispute following Chisora's defeat to Vitali Klitschko, although not before Chisora had disgraced himself with his conduct towards the Ukrainian ahead of the WBC heavyweight title fight. Lewis believes ignoring the BBBoC to arrange the fight shows a distinct lack of class on the part of both fighters - as he says the BBBoC have been "one billion per cent right" in their conduct so far.

"We are going through a disciplinary process right now and the British Boxing Board of Control is handling that," Lewis said. "Should they be allowed to fight? Sure - but only when the time is right, when the disciplinary process has run its course. Chisora did a couple of bad things which, in football terms, brought the game into disrepute, and although he has apologised, that is not enough. Maybe he needs anger management therapy, some outside help, to draw a line under what happened in Germany."

He added: "I don't think there can ever be justification for going behind the British board's back. We all know the board is there for a reason, and they made a decision to suspend Chisora's licence in good faith, so to go around their jurisdiction is pretty poor, it's in poor taste and for two boxers from England to go abroad and behave in that manner was damaging for the country's image. Slapping your opponent at the weigh-in, spitting in another champion's face in the ring, throwing a punch while holding a bottle and threatening to shoot a fellow boxer was all way over the top. It left a bad taste and I'm glad the British Boxing Board of Control stepped in and took the action they did. I make them a billion per cent right for doing that."

Lewis believes the anticipation ahead of the Haye-Chisora bout - 20,000 tickets were sold in just 48 hours - is an indictment of the poor state of the heavyweight division at the moment. "We're waiting for that next superstar to shine," he noted. "I don't think there are any decent heavyweights coming through in America because most of the big guys there are doing other sports and different things."

Sjekloca and Dirrell, who is out of action for a reported six months, were ordered to fight for the WBC title, after Andre Ward was declared “Champion in Recess.”

“This is why I signed with Lou DiBella,” Rodriguez said from Andy Lee’s training camp where he is sparring with the Irish middleweight contender. “It’s my time and I’m ready to replace Dirrell against Sjekloca. If anybody can get this opportunity for me it’s Lou.”
Sjekloca (24-0, 7 KOs), a 33-year-old Serbian who lives in Montenegro, has fought only once outside of Montenegro and Serbia, in 2010 against 8-24 Artem Vychkin in a win by six-round decision. The lone opponent of note Sjekloca has fought is four-time world title challenger and former European champion Khoren Gevor. “We’re ready for the best but it looks like Ward’s moving up in weight and (Lucian) Bute’s tied-up with (Carl) Froch,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army noted. “Right now, though, Edwin has earned a world title shot and we’re confident he’s ready to fight and beat Sjekloca.”

Quote:American boxing fans will have the opportunity to watch red-hot British heavyweight prospect David Price in action this Saturday afternoon (May 19) on FIGHT NOW TV TM - America's only 24-hour combat sports and entertainment channel - live starting at 5:45 PM / ET from Liverpool, United Kingdom. English champion Price 12-0, 10 KOs), a 2008 Olympic bronze medal winner, meets Sam Sexton (15-2, 6 KOs) in the 12-round main event for the vacant British and Commonwealth titles.

The undefeated Price is an imposing figure in the ring, standing 6' 8" and weighing 245 pounds. He is coming off of an impressive English title heavyweight title-winning performance last January against veteran John McDermott (26-7), in which Price floored his outclassed opponent three times in the opening round. As a prelude for Saturday afternoon's heavyweight championship match between Price and Sexton, FIGHT NOW TV will replay Price's first-round knockout of McDermott on Friday night (May 18) at 10 PM / ET.

The 28-year-old Price is the No. 8 rated heavyweight in Europe, as well as No. 22 by the World Boxing Council ("WBC"). Sexton (15-2, 6 KOs), who is ranked No. 11 in Europe, is best known for winning the second PrizeFighter Tournament in 2008. He is the former Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight Champion having twice defeated Irish heavyweight Martin Rogan.

"Frank Maloney has been promoting great, entertaining shows in the United Kingdom for many years," noted FIGHT NOW TV Co-Founder & General Manager Mike Garrow. "We're fortunate to be partnering with him for this show. This is a continuation of FIGHT NOW TV delivering world-class fights to American fans. Price is a physical monster who people are already predicting will become world champion some day. He has Olympian pedigree and we're delighted to be giving American fans an opportunity to watch him fight live against a trough, experienced opponent in Sexton."

The other FIGHT NOW TV aired bout is the 12-round co-feature between Paul "Eddy" Edwards (9-1, 3 KOs) and Kevin "Satch" Satchell (7-0) for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight championship.

Say it like it is: Alex Ariza has recently answered some fan questions via Twitter, and his responses were exceedingly shocking.

As a big part of team Pacquiao, one would expect team members to take care in making sure that whatever they say causes minimal harm to their co-workers, yet Ariza’s responses were clearly emotional and most likely honest.

One person had asked whether Pacquiao would ever fight Berto, Martinez or Canelo and Ariza’s reply was: “Manny can’t fight anyone not promoted by Bob.” Not only are the boxing fans noticing and fuming about this phenomenon, but now even members of the team expose it as they see it. While it is no secret, still hearing it from Ariza himself makes it that much more authentic.

Another Tweeter stated: “It’s not all Arum, its Floyd too with his BS demands,” to which Ariza responded with a simple: “Wrong, it’s Arum.” A straightforward effective response from the man who knows more than most of us about this topic. Again, while Ariza is not writing paragraphs about his dislike of Arum and Bob’s direct involvement with the Mayweather Jr. fiasco, Ariza makes his opinion clear.

“Do you think Manny Pacquiao deserves 50/50 from the PPV record maker Floyd Mayweather?” was yet another question to Pacquiao strength trainer Alex Ariza, to which he responded with: “Not if Floyd's #’s are higher.” In the midst of the financial dilemma that camp Mayweather Jr. and camp Pacquiao have recently had, surprisingly Ariza, the man that has been in Pacquiao’s corner for a very long time, and essentially his well paid employee, believes that technically speaking, Floyd deserves the higher pay in the proposed mega fight.

I don’t know about you, but I think that this deserves some attention and respect. Ariza is public about his opinion, and says what he thinks in a direct, no nonsense fashion, even if the truth may hurt his client.
