Floyd Mayweather To Get Record $41.5 Million Guarantee For Canelo Alvarez Fight

Mayweather will receive a record $41.5 million guarantee for the Alvarez fight, according to Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s longtime confident and head of his promotion company. Ellerbe and Golden Boy Promotions chief Richard Schaefer stopped by Forbes Wednesday to discuss the business of “The One.†The guarantee shatters the previous $32 million high mark set by Mayweather. He receives the guarantee right after the fight and then will sit back and collect his share of PPV receipts as they trickle in from carriers like DirecTV and Dish Network. It will be the biggest payday of Mayweather’s career when all the PPV numbers are tallied, topping the $45 million he netted for the Cotto fight.

“I have 2.6 million [PPV buys] in my mind. Records are meant to be broken,†says a hopeful Schaefer, whose company is co-promoting the fight with Mayweather Promotions. Schaefer acknowledges 2.5 million will be tough to top, but says that even at 2 million buys “The One†will set a PPV revenue record. The addition of high-def telecasts has allowed carriers to jack up pricing to $74.95 for the HD telecast on Showtime PPV, which 60-65% of fans buy instead of the standard telecast. The average cost for the Floyd-Canelo bout is expected to be $70 resulting in $140 million in revenue if two million fans make the purchase.

The Canelo-Mayweather bout already had another record under its belt with the biggest gate ever for a fight at $19.9 million (the MGM Grand sold out less than 24 hours after tickets went on sale). The previous high was $18.4 million for the 2007 Mayweather-De La Hoya contest. “Ticket sales are an indicator of pay-per-view sales with every fight,†says Schaefer. If that trend holds, this fight is going to be a PPV blockbuster.

Mayweather, Golden Boy and Showtime are pulling out all of the stops to make this the biggest bout ever. They spent $2 million on an 11-city press tour to hype the event. They signed seven sponsors for the fight, including leading brands AT&T T -1.3%, Corona and Valvoline. The sponsors are paying record cash amounts to the promoters, as well as to market the fight.

Several other factors could push this fight to a record PPV audience. There were 61 million homes with PPV capabilities in 2007, but today it stands at 90 million. Sept. 14 is also the date of the biggest college football game of the season in Alabama vs. Texas A&M featuring the defending champs against Heisman winner Johnny Manziel. The game is being broadcast on Showtime parent CBS CBS -1.12%, which will promote that evening’s fight to a massive, sports hungry audience.

Other revenue streams include 15,000 closed circuit seats showing the fight in Las Vegas that sold out at $100 a pop. The promoters are looking to add another 10,000 seats. More than 500 movie theaters with 125,000 seats across the country are showing the fight and are expected to charge $25 to get in. Money from closed circuit and movie theaters flows towards the promoters in roughly a 70-30 split.

Add in TV rights around the world (the fight is being shown in 160 countries) and the expected gross revenue for the fight should top $200 million. And as promoter, all the money flows through Mayweather. They don’t call him “Money†for nothing.
