Unbeaten junior welterweight Paul Spadafora returns to the ring on Saturday for a junior welterweight clash against once-beaten Johan Perez at the Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in Chester, West Virginia.

Spadafora (48-0-1, 19 knockouts), who turned 38 in September, was last in the ring for a unanimous decision victory over Robert Frankel in April.

In the 30-year-old Perez (17-1-1, 12 KOs), Spadafora faces a winner of two straight since falling by seventh-round technical majority decision to Pablo Cesar Cano in July of 2012.

Perez is coming off a unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Yoshihiro Kamegai in June, and was 5-0-1, with five knockouts in his previous six bouts before falling to Cano.

Saturday's event is co-promoted by Roy Jones Jr. Presents, Golden Boy Promotions and TNT Promotions.

Spadafora was once a highly-rated fighter but has been derailed by repeated troubles with the law. He won the IBF lightweight title by unanimous decision over Israel Cardona in August of 1999 and defended it eight times.

I thought WBF had officially adopted Spaddie :cheah

Only 'cause Hank thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread? Even he wouldn't feel that way had they both not been from Pittsburgh. :coffee

Spaddy could not get it done

CHESTER, W. Va. -- Perhaps somewhere up in boxing heaven, Rocky Marciano tilted back a glass of red. The Rock’s hallowed mark wasn’t touched again. And somewhere in the gated Las Vegas mansion of one Floyd Mayweather Jr., it’s doubtful that Spadafora’s loss for the WBA super welterweight title late Saturday night registered much more than a stifled yawn.

Before a stunned near-full house at Mountaineer, Spadafora was handed his first taste of defeat as a pro dating back to 1997. Johan Perez scored a majority decision victory (117-111, 115-113, 114-114) as Spadafora fell to 48-1-1, one short of equaling Marciano’s run of going unbeaten to start a career.

“I thought it was a close fight,” said Spadafora, who received 10 stitches to two cuts above his left eye and appeared to have suffered an elbow injury to his left, punching hand. “I was reaching too much. I couldn’t get inside. He had a (messed-up) rhythm. He fought a good fight. The better guy won today.

“Going into the final round I thought I needed that round to win and I pulled it off. I don’t know. That’s boxing though. It was a close fight. You can’t say I won big or that he won big. It was a close fight. I fought my heart out. I’m not ashamed of nothing.”

Perez wasn’t, as his nickname suggests, “El Terrible.” In fact, the Venezuelan knockout artist was quite “El Good.” Certainly taller than anyone Spadafora had faced. Perez used his superior reach to his advantage picking Spadafora’s trademark defense as the bout went on, though Spadafora, despite the deep cuts, was never in any serious danger.

“I could have lived with a draw,” said Tom Yankello, Spadafora’s Ambridge-based trainer. “It was nip and tuck. There were some rounds where it was questionable who was winning because Paul was dictating some of the action. “I thought we squeaked it out.”

A victory, which would have given Spadafora his third career title belt (to go along with his current NABF light welterweight crown), was hoped to help him land a long-awaited bout against Mayweather.

saying he doesn't count means that you can't count buffalo alvarez, chiquita gonzalez, chocolatito roman, calderon, jovanni segura, and michael carbajal....in other words, go fuck yourself.
