Boxing champ Jermain Taylor faces multiple gun charges after incident at MLK parade in Arkansas

IBF middleweight champion Jermain Taylor is in police custody in Little Rock, Arkansas, after reportedly firing shots during a Martin Luther King Day parade.

ArkNews.com reported Taylor that was taken to Little Rock police headquarters at 2 p.m. Monday, at which time a gun was recovered. After interviews with detectives, Taylor was charged with five counts of aggravated assault, three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and possession of marijuana.

Taylor, 36, was scheduled to defend his title Feb. 6 against Sergio Mora at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, but KARK 4 News of Little Rock reported Monday that the bout would have to be postponed due to a training injury:

Here is the low down on Taylor's activity

A Little Rock woman said Tuesday that Jermain Taylor threatened to fatally shoot her 5-, 3-, and 1-year-old children, and that she knocked the gun away after the cursing middleweight boxing champion put the weapon to her husband's head.

Toya Smith, 40, said she and her family were having a good time at the city's Martin Luther King Jnr. Day parade Monday when Taylor produced his boxing belt and asked to get a photo with her son. Smith says her family had never met Taylor before and that it appeared he had been drinking.

"He bent down to give my son the belt and he almost fell over and dropped the belt, and he thought my baby dropped the belt," Smith said.

She said Taylor — who already faces charges in an August shooting in Maumelle, Arkansas — produced a gun and fired two shots into the air and threatened to kill her husband.

"He put (the gun) up against his temple, I jumped in front of it and it went off up into the air," injuring her husband's ear, Smith said. "He was going to shoot him, but I saw it, he was going to kill him and I had to hit the gun."

Taylor's attorneys did not immediately return phone calls for comment Tuesday.

A Little Rock police report says Taylor was arrested without incident and a gun was recovered. He is jailed on charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a minor and drug possession.

Smith said she and her family tried to get into their car and leave, but Taylor continued pointing the gun toward the vehicle.

"He was pointing at the kids, so I jumped in front of him again and said 'Please don't shoot my kids,'" Smith said.

She said Taylor cursed, saying that he didn't care about the children or her and that he was going to kill her husband.

Smith said her son and two daughters were unable to sleep and cried most of the night.

Taylor, who won the International Boxing Federation middleweight title in October, faces first-degree battery and first-degree terroristic threatening charges in connection with the August incident in which Pulaski County sheriff's deputies say Taylor shot his cousin.

He has pleaded not guilty in that case, and a trial has been set for June.

Tailor is probably suffering brain issues from the years of boxing.

IBF middleweight titleholder Jermain Taylor has been ordered to undergo a mental evaluation, according to The Arkansas Democrat.

Taylor, 36, was arrested in August for shooting his cousin and again earlier this month for pointing a gun at a man’s head and threatening to shoot three small children at a Martin Luther King Jr. day parade in Little Rock, Ark.

A Pulaski County judge granted a request Tuesday from Taylor’s attorneys that he be moved to a state hospital for a full evaluation and also granted prosecutors’ request that Taylor have a neuropsychological evaluation. Taylor’s next court hearing is Feb. 10 and his evaluation will be presented to the court April 27, according to the reports.

Following the second incident, Taylor was booked and returned to jail after having his bond revoked by a judge in connection to the August firearms charge. Taylor was released on $50,000 bond after being arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a minor and marijuana possession.

Taylor just got stripped of his strap!

Troubled two-time middleweight titlist Jermain Taylor is a champion no more. The jailed boxer was formally stripped of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight belt, due to his current legal troubles standing in the way of honoring his mandatory obligations.

"We had to vacate the title," IBF Championship Chairman Lindsay Tucker told BoxingScene.com, confirming news originally revealed by Scott Shaffer of BoxingTalk.com . "We will be going down the list of challengers to fill the vacancy."

The current mandatory challenger, Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam is now in line to fight for the vacant title. The next highest-rated contender is former titlist Felix Sturm, who is ranked #3 by the IBF.

"We are waiting to hear back from the Sturm camp," Tucker confirmed. "If he accepts, we will order the fight and the two camps will have to negotiate terms. If he declines, we will continue to go down the list."

Taylor was due to defend his title tonight versus Sergio Mora at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Miss., the same venue where he regained the belt with a win over Sam Soliman last October.

Plans to return to the Gulf Coast were violently disrupted due to his latest run-in with the law, when he was arrested on a slew of charges stemming from his disturbing behavior during a Martin Luther King Jr. parade in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Taylor was initially freed on bail, but the criminal charges were in violation of the terms of his previous release following a domestic shooting in his home last August. The latest arrest resulted in a bond revocation, forcing his surrender to Pulaski County authorities on January 21.

Mora remains on the show, facing Abraham 'Abie' Han for a regional title in the  ESPN2 Friday Night Fights  headliner. The winner will acquire the USBA title, which could also result in a considerable elevation in the rankings. Mora and Han are currently rated #14 and #15, respectively, too low in the rankings to warrant consideration to fill the vacant #2 slot, which would've guaranteed the winner a shot at N'Dam and the vacant IBF belt.
