HBO passes on Pacquiao vs. Vargas fight, drops Pacquiao's contract

Pacman getting that Rigo treatment.

HBO has officially stepped away from Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino superstar recently announced his return to the ring, and will take on Jessie Vargas on November 5th. This announcement didn't exactly light the world on fire, especially against such an unheralded opponent (though he is the WBO welterweight champ). But in an unexpected move, the PPV won't be distributed by HBO. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum confirmed that to Ring TV:

"Definitely it’s not going to be HBO. HBO had a contract and decided to pass because it was two weeks in front of their Ward-Kovalev fight."

While that is true, there's more to it. HBO has relinquished the rest of their contractual right to Pac's fights with this move. That means they wouldn't automatically air a rematch between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather if it did indeed happen. While that's not going to break records like the first one, it would definitely be a money fight. So it's interesting that they're choosing to walk away.

Meanwhile, Arum will shop the fight around to different broadcasters now that HBO has stepped away. ESPN, a Turner network, and even traditional competitor Showtime are now on the table to air the bout.

"I haven’t spoken to them (Showtime). But there would be no impediment to that. When I get back next week, Stephen (Espinoza) will be one of the guys I’m calling."

It seems like this fight isn't going to be a very big draw, but it's still likely to line Pacquiao's pockets nicely.

I dont watch jessie vargas when he fights on reg hbo , proud of hbo saying no to bob let him distribute this crap thru TR like he claims to "save 7.5%" fee and take the loss all by himself

last ppv i saw pac in he didnt fight at all like he barked and then had the nerve to claim he ripped all of us off to get his pay day going in "injured" fuck him

tell me who was picked to shut someone down and who was picked to be relentless , then stop with your hypo-transparent agenda , and  tell me how the  fight went?

and even if it was below standards for floyds stats ( what ever they are ) it was enough to win this fight , please stat master tell me how far below they were  pac was around 500-600 below normal? floyd 300 ? enlighten me

Manny never showed up, its that simple but Floyd did enough to win comfortably without having to get out of second gear - to hit and then avoid being hit back is the aim of the game!!

yeah, but when they're both trying to hit and don't hit anything because they are both avoiding getting hit.......MAKES FOR A FUCKING BORING FIGHT.

I'm tired of that shit, the art of hitting and not getting hit back.  that's exactly what happened in the Floyd/pac fight, except no one was hitting.

who wants to see that shit?
