Tyson Fury Announces Retirement in Profane Outburst

Tyson Fury's professional career may be at its end after the Twitter account of the former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion announced he was hanging up his gloves.

Updates From Wednesday, Nov. 20:

Conflicting reports coming from Fury's camp. First, the boxer's Twitter feed seemed to confirm he was calling it quits:

Just to confirm I'm not in a bad mood or anything. I've retired 1000000% no matter what ill never fight again!

But, Fury's uncle, Peter, denied that his nephew was calling it quits, according to ESPNUK.

---End of Update---

However, while the message itself may not be too cryptic, there's a good chance that there is more to Fury's retirement tweet than meets the eye (Warning: Language NSFW is used throughout):

Hi every1 I have officially retired from boxing. There's to many bent people in the sport. They will have to fuck some1 else. Good by boxin

The announcement—if genuine— would come as a huge surprise given the fact there were no precursors leading to such a decision. However, a more likely outcome is that Fury's account has been hacked and will soon see the retirement statement rescinded.

There are oddities in Fury's Twitter bio that lead one to believe the fighter's account has been taken over. The text says: "Don't give a f**k about anything. Every day closer to the coffin. Skint member. Gypsy b****rd."

Fury has always been proud of his gypsy heritage and so it strikes as strange that the boxer would refer to his background in such fashion.

While a lot can happen in 24 hours, it was only on Tuesday that Fury was touting himself as the biggest name in the heavyweight division and promoting a potential bout with Deontay Wilder:

Fury's promoter calls Schaefer regarding Wilder, then goes silent

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said he received a telephone call from Mick Hennessy, the promoter of British heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, regarding a potential between the 6-foot-9 Englishman and 6-foot-7 knockout specialist Deontay "The Bronze Bomber" Wilder's in the wake of Fury's scheduled bout with David Haye having been called off for the second time.

But Schaefer said that since expressing genuine interest in the bout, he has not heard back from Hennessy and has not been unable to contact him.

"I got a call two days ago from Tyson Fury's promoter, Mick Hennessy, asking me if there would be any interest in Deontay Wilder fighting Tyson Fury, and I said, 'Yes, there is,' and then I said, 'make me an offer, and he was not prepared to make me an offer to fight Fury," said Schaefer of Fury, whose bout with Haye was called off after the former titleholder underwent surgery in Germany on Thursday morning (Nov. 14) to reconstruct his right shoulder.

"So then I said, 'Well, you know what we can do? We can just split it 50-50 and we'll get it done. Then he said, 'Well, let me talk to Sky [sports channel in England] and I will get back to you. Well, that was two days ago. So I tried to reach him yesterday and he didn't answer his phone or call me back. So what I think has happened is that he must have talked to his matchmaker and they must have realized that Tyson Fury has no chance, and I think that they must have changed their minds because, all of a sudden, it has become very, very quiet. It's as if the telephone lines between the United States and the UK suddenly don't work."

Hennessy is talking about Wilder (30-0, 30 knockouts), however, even if not to Schaefer.

In his last fight last month, Wilder dropped his man three times during a fourth-round stoppage Nicolai Firtha at Boardwalk Hall on Showtime, and then, reiterated his goal while sitting to the left of Wilder during the post-fight press conference.

Wilder was coming off back-to-back first-round KOs of ex-beltholder Sergei Liakhovich in August and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Audley Harrison in April.

Wilder open letter to Fury

Tyson, I know you are frustrated with the whole Haye situation. You are a top heavyweight with top people behind you. You want to fight the best and have always stepped up to the plate. Forget retirement. You have a long and bright future in front of you.

We at Team Wilder understand. We believe you and Deontay are the two best young heavyweights in the World and a fight between the two of you would put true heavyweight boxing back on top. We want to make this happen. This is the single biggest heavyweight fight that can be made now and the fans deserve it. You deserve it. Deontay deserves it.

You both should be paid accordingly and in line with the magnitude of the event. Every single person or corporation that would have attended, bought pay per view, sponsored, advertised or otherwise supported you vs. Haye would jump on board for you vs. Wilder.

How could they not? Two big, athletic, gifted, tough, strong, undefeated heavyweights with personality and punch in the same ring at the same time with everything on the line!!! You vs. Haye was a domestic clash with worldwide impact. You vs. Wilder is an international clash with worldwide impact. To be clear, we are not asking for Haye money. We are asking to be respected financially for being one half of the biggest heavyweight fight of the year.

We want the fight. We are willing to come your way. We have been to the UK several times before and loved it. In fact, it’s as well as we’ve ever been treated. I grew up on Bruno, Lewis, Mason, Benn, Eubanks, Collins, Pyatt, Graham, Watson, Honeyghan and the like. (Was ringside for my friend Sumbu Kalambay vs Pyatt and watched Kel McKenzie-Paul Harvey steal the show)! Deontay wants to come your way. I do too.

Mick has my email. Time is becoming a factor. We need to have this wrapped up soon so as to keep the Feb. date.

As for credentials, I am Jay Deas, co-manager of Deontay Wilder along with Shelly Finkel and advisor Al Haymon. Our promoter is Golden Boy. I am day to day with Deontay as Peter is with you. I co-train Deontay along with Mark Breland, cut man Russ Anber and Camp Director Cuz Hill.

We look forward to hearing from your team.
