American heavyweight Damian ‘Bolo’ Wills became a millionaire overnight recently – but he didn’t land a surprise shot at Wladimir Klitschko.

The 34-year-old struck lucky on a lottery scratch card this week and instantly scooped $1 million, equivalent to around £596,000.

It’s certainly a far cry from the surroundings of York Hall and potential earnings of £32,000 for winning Prizefighter, when he suffered a quarter-final defeat to two-time champion Michael Sprott.

That tournament, back in November of last year, was only his second fight since August 2011, a defeat to former Lennox Lewis conqueror Oliver McCall. It’s almost certain Wills won’t have to bother stepping into a ring again.

Wills holds a record of 31-4-1 with 24 knockouts, though lost to Chris Arreola in his only serious step-up in class.

Prizefighter consist of three-round fights with quarter-finals, semi-finals and final all taking place on one night at York Hall in Bethnal Green. Previous winners include Martin Murray, Audley Harrison and Mike Perez, who faces Bryant Jennings in a heavyweight title eliminator next month.

‘Bolo’ has not yet indicated what he will do with his new-found fortune, though he certainly isn’t short of options
