Andre Kut of KEA Boxing Promotions presented an exciting night of boxing featuring local rising talent this past Saturday at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ. In the eight round welterweight main event, Alex “The Brick City Bullet†Perez (18-1, 10 KOs) of Newark, NJ stopped Jeremiah Wiggins (10-3-1, 5 KOs) of Newport News, VA.

Perez entered the ring to a loud partisan crowd of local fans. Perez had lost for the first and only time in his career to Antonin Decarie in September 2012 for the then vacant NABF welterweight title. This was his second comeback fight as he sought to re-establish himself as a force in the welterweight division.

The first round opened tentatively with each fighter feeling each other out with jabs. Perez fought out of southpaw stance with Wiggins boxed orthodox. The round progressed with both fighters switching to body attacks. In the second stanza Perez found his rhythm and from the lefty stance started to take control. Wiggins did momentarily daze Perez with a hard right hand to the head but Perez rebounded furiously and put Wiggins down for a standing eight count. Perez swarmed his opponent as the action resumed putting Wiggins down for another eight count in the last seconds of the round.

Higgins was obviously hurt and dazed as he returned to his corner.

Perez stalked the retreating Higgins at the beginning of the third round. Higgins was caught along the ropes and Perez seemed to be throwing every punch in his arsenal. Referee Randy Neumann stopped the contest at 1:02 of the third despite vigorous protests from Wiggins.

Perez stated that he had felt a little rusty and only gave himself a “B minus†on his performance. He promised that the fans will be seeing a lot more from him.

Gunn scores first round TKO

The co-main event featured junior middleweight Bobby Gunn, Jr. (3-0, 3 KOs) of Hackensack, NJ versus Christopher Patrick Strootman of Wilmington, DE making his pro debut in a scheduled four rounds. Strootman began with frenetic footwork trying to keep his distance while Gunn patiently stalked his opponent. A hard right hand to the head put Strootman down for an eight count. When the action resumed, Gunn launched a cannon ball left hook to the body that put Strootman down and unable to get up. Referee David Fields declared the fight over by TKO at 2:09 of the first.

Viruet wins debut

Female junior middleweight Connie Viruet of Hoboken, NJ made a successful pro debut scoring a third round TKO over Angel Ford (0-4) out of Little Rock, AR. Hard body work from Viruet wore down the more experienced Ford. In the third round Viruet’s superior power drove Ford to the ropes. Viruet unleashed a barrage of vicious body-head combos that compelled referee Randy Neumann to stop the contest at .58 of the third.

Serena outclass Singleton for debut win

With both fighters making their pro debut, super welterweight Alex Serna of Bogota, Columbia but now fighting out of Queens, NY quickly overwhelmed Steve Singleton of Newark, DE. From the opening bell, Serna outboxed and outclassed Singleton who was obviously in over his head. Referee David Fields waved the contest off for a TKO at 1:26 of the first.

Cusumano pounds Holmes

A four round heavyweight bout featured Joe Cusumano (7-1, 4 KOs) of Virginia Beach, VA against Excell Holmes (2-4-1, 1 KO) of Buffalo, NY. Both boxers opened testing each other with jabs. In the second round a war broke out. An overhand right put Holmes down for a standing eight. When the fight resumed, Cusumano raked Homes with body and head combos forcing referee Randy Neumann to stop the contest at the 2:41 mark. Cusumano stated that after being out of action for over a year that he felt ready to fight every month.

Holman and Bonds go to war

The opening four round lightweight bout featured two winless fighters looking for their first win as Dwayne Holman, Jr. of Livingston, NJ battled Richard Bonds of Newburgh, NY.

Both came out at the opening bell furiously winging bombs with bad intentions. Each fighter settled down into more boxing than brawling as the round progressed. The second round also opened up with a wild furious exchange. Holman drove Bonds to the canvas with a serious of rights but several were behind the head which elicited a warning from referee Eric Fields. The third round opened with another hellacious start. Holman knocked Bonds off his feet with a sweeping overhand right. Bonds took a standing eight and the action resumed. Bonds hit the canvas again early in the fourth. Later in the round, the referee gave Bonds another eight count. Judge Kasson Cheeks scored the contest at 39-34 while judges Eugene Grant and Emil Conforti tallied their scorecards at 40-33.

Holman wins his first bout as his record rises to 1-1 while Bonds falls to 0-2.
