Former Heavyweight champion David Haye could be in line to contest the WBA (regular) belt, according to the sanctioning body's president Gilberto Mendoza, after the WBA were ordered to award Lucas Browne a title shot against Fres Oquendo.

Haye, who hails from Bermondsey, South London, held the title between November 2009, when he defeated the 7ft giant Nikolai Valuev in what was dubbed ‘David vs. Goliath’, until July 2011, when he succumbed to the power of then heavyweight kingpin, Wladimir Klitschko.

Since his return from a three year hiatus due to injury, Haye has amassed two victories so far, with all sanctioning bodies being impressed enough - despite the calibre of his opposition - to rank him in their top tens, with the WBA putting Haye in fifth.

Recent events have unfolded since the controversial fight and subsequent aftermath between Lucas Browne and Ruslan Chagaev, with Chagaev being stripped of the title due failure to pay the sanctioning fees, and Browne’s success in winning a legal dispute over the WBA's decision to strip him of the title. This left the WBA with no other option in ordering the fight between Browne and current mandatory challenger Fres Oquendo.

WBA president, Gilberto Mendoza, exclusively told Sky Sports “Browne's title shot came out of a legal settlement we had to do after we got sued by Browne's people for stripping him.

I think the WBA grounds were very strong. He took us to court and we settled for giving him a title opportunity

If by that time David is a leading contender, that fight could happen, but then we have on the other hand Fres Oquendo, who has a court order saying that he must have a chance to fight for the championship.

We would love to have David back as our champion, that's what I can tell you, but boxing is complicated, it's not easy”

David Haye has yet to officially announce his next fight, with the long brewing feud with Shannon ‘the cannon’ Briggs yet to come to ahead, but could a fight between Haye and the winner of Browne vs. Oquendo be next? Who knows? But only one thing is for certain, the Hayemaker is finally back.
