However, whilst McDonnell may have gotten the verdict on the scorecards of all three judges, the result was the most controversial of the night. The majority of those inside the arena, including the Sky Sports pundits, were of the opinion that McDonnell was soundly beaten by his Venezuelan opponent Liborio Solis. In fact when the scores of: • 116 – 112 • 116 – 113 • 117 – 111 all in favour of McDonnell, were read out, they were greeted with booing from a disbelieving crowd.
