Lucas Matthysse, the hard-punching Argentine junior welterweight contender, known as “The Machine†to the fans has now added another “Machine†to his arsenal of firepower. Already equipped with heavy hands and bazooka like punches, he’s now added another addition to his circle, the moneymaking machine like advisor, Al Haymon.

With Floyd Mayweather Jr. having 5 fights left in his Showtime contract and a shortage of opponents, could this be a strategically well-thought-out plan on behalf of the powerful advisor in signing Matthysse?

Matthysse has a huge test before him come May 18th, when he goes up against the always durable, battle tested, strong-willed, sturdy chinned Lamont Peterson. Peterson is coming off a big win over Kendall Holt, regardless if you may feel Holt is or was past his prime, the fashion of the win was worthy of mention.

Factor in that at the end of this unofficial tournament sits the goose that lays the golden egg in Amir ‘King’ Khan. A man Peterson knows well and is more than interested in having some vindication because of his controversial win over Khan last year.

Before any redemption can be had Peterson and Matthysse must square off for one of the most anticipated fights of this year. Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO) will face Lamont Peterson on May 18 in Atlantic City, in a Showtime main event. The winner of that fight is expected to face WBC and WBA titlist Danny Garcia, likely on September 7, also on Showtime.

This is something Danny Garcia’s father, Angel has expressed extreme dislike for as he stated. His thoughts are that he feels it’s unfair to all the participants included in the unofficial tournament that Khan sits atop a metaphorical throne, awaiting for a challenger to emerge when Khan is no champion and Khan has lost two of the men in this tournament already.

Haymon, of course, is considered by many the most powerful man in boxing today, so the move to acquire Lucas Matthysse is an intelligent one. Regardless of the outcome of this unofficial tournament Al Haymon will still have either or, the top man at 140 pound division or the next man to face Floyd Mayweather Jr.
