Gamboa faces no threat of suspension

WTF? :fook

Several prominent Major League Baseball players, including Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez, are facing suspensions for using performance-enhancing drugs after the owner of a Miami clinic agreed to speak with MLB officials.
ESPN's Outside the Lines reported that two unnamed sources told it that Anthony Bosch, owner of Miami's Biogenesis clinic, had agreed to speak to baseball investigators. According to the ESPN report, Major League Baseball will seek to suspend 20 players whose names appeared in Biogenesis records.

The Miami New Times first reported the athletes' link to Biogenesis in an explosive January report.
Gamboa, who fights at the Bell Centre in Montreal this weekend, was included in the original Miami New Times report. However, he won't face punishment even if he fully admits using PEDs.

Unlike baseball, there is no union in boxing and no collective bargaining agreement. The penalties for PED use in baseball came about as the result of negotiations between MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association.
In boxing, the only time a fighter would face punishment for PED use would be if he tested positive after a bout or if a state commission randomly tested him prior to one.

Otherwise, Gamboa is clear. He could admit to using all sorts of performance enhancers, but as long as he provides a clean sample following Saturday's bout, he has nothing to fear in terms of suspension, now or ever.
There are many weaknesses in boxing's drug testing programme. States don't have the funds to test correctly, and many fighters who are cheating are able to mask their use and get away with it.

There is very little random, unannounced testing in the sport and that's the best way to catch PED users.
Hopefully the situation will improve, but there is very little sentiment in the sport to affect meaningful change.
